Despite being named after the largest state in Mexico, the Chihuahua is the smallest purebred dog in the world. But don’t let its size fool you. The Chihuahua is one of our most popular companion dogs – fast, lively and full of confidence. They’re equally at home on the agility course or snuggled up on the sofa.
Fast facts about the Chihuahua
Origin: Mexico

The Chihuahua is thus considered one of the longest-lived dog breeds in the world.

Chihuahua as a puppy – a safe start makes a difference
It’s hard not to melt for a Chihuahua puppy. At the same time, its small body requires a lot of care – especially in the beginning. Small bellies and small bladders mean more frequent meals and more walks. Self-confidence, on the other hand, is often high right from the start.
The key is calm, consistency and presence. If you give your puppy security from day one, you lay the foundation for a stable and brave adult dog.
Training: small dog, same rules
The Chihuahua’s size shapes its whole life – but it needs just as clear a framework as larger dogs. Be consistent, gentle and encouraging. Without the right guidance, a small dog can easily become insecure and defensive.
A puppy course is therefore a wise choice. It provides both structure and tools to build security, cooperation and self-confidence early on.
Socialization – more than meetings
Socialization is not just about meeting other dogs and people. It’s about getting your puppy used to sounds, environments, surfaces, smells and everyday situations – like riding the bus or encountering city life.
The most important period extends to around 13 weeks of age. Take it easy, don’t rush and let the puppy set the pace. Your own mood is contagious – a confident owner makes a confident dog.
What does a Chihuahua puppy eat?
During its first year, the Chihuahua puppy should eat a puppy food adapted for small breeds. In the beginning, 3-4 meals per day are needed, preferably spread out to keep energy levels stable.
If you have a puppy that gobbles up food, a slow feeder or lick food can be an easy way to create calmer meals and better digestion.
What is the Chihuahua like as an adult?
Chihuahuas are fast, alert and brave – often with a strong herding instinct and great loyalty to their owner. Without early socialization, they can be reserved in new environments, but with the right conditions, they are confident, social and easy to take along.
The breed has clear guarding instincts and is happy to speak up. At the same time, minutes later, the same dog can be cuddling with the “intruder”.
Exercise & Activation
Chihuahuas don’t need long miles every day – but they do need regular exercise. Short walks, play, brain training and preferably activities like agility work well. And yes, they love couch cuddles too. Balance is key.
Grooming – simple and straightforward
Chihuahua is easy to groom. Bathe when necessary. If you have a long-haired variety, brushing once a week is usually enough to avoid tangles.
Health – what’s good to know?
Small breeds can have specific challenges. These include the Chihuahua:
Dental and bite problems
Sensitive eyes
Patellar luxation (knee joints)
With the right food, dental care and regular check-ups, many Chihuahuas live long and healthy lives.

Who is the Chihuahua suitable for?
The Chihuahua is an adaptable companion dog that will happily accompany you on most things – from forest walks to quiet evenings at home. But it should not be ‘cuddled’. They need training, routines and respect to thrive.
As a family dog
It works well in a family, but requires that children learn to be careful. Responsibility and supervision always lies with adults.
As a first dog
Chihuahua can absolutely be a great first dog – provided you are prepared to train, socialize and set boundaries. Small size does not mean less responsibility.
Size & appearance
The Chihuahua is the world’s smallest dog breed. The weight is usually between 1.5 and 3 kg, and the height at the withers around 15-23 cm.
The breed comes in two varieties:
Shorthaired: Short, soft and shiny coat
Longhaired: Silky, slightly wavy coat with tufts on ears, legs and tail
Origins – a breed of mystery
No one knows for sure exactly where the Chihuahua comes from. Some say it was with the Aztecs or the Incas, others that it came from Spanish dogs in the 15th century. The most widely accepted is that the breed was discovered in the state of Chihuahua in the late 19th century.
